12/23/2023 0 Comments 03 mazda protege no spark![]() ![]() Today, driving to work I notice what feels like a misfire at low RPMs when shifting through the gears (5 spd). The car fired up fine and I gave it an oil change for good measure. I went to Autozone yesterday with the intent of installing the plugs myself (most mechanics in my area closed on Sunday) and purchased the Bosch Platinum Plus 2's, which is a 2 prong design. I have AAA so I shut down immediately and had the car towed home to my driveway. They were standard Bosch Platinums and I had 19,000 miles on the plugs. The threads on the head and plug are fine and it appears maybe the mechanic installing them didn't tighten them down during the last tune-up (100K miles). Saturday night I had a spark plug literally pop-out of the cylinder head while on the interstate. 2003 Mazda Protege5 Nicknamed the ProtoJ recently endured a fatal blow to its ignition system, while on a weekend cruise. The shop wasn't sounding super enthusiastic about working on this car (they had it for 3 days) and barely touched it. Spun crank bearings are rare and sound deep. What it likely is is either a broken piston skirt or a spun rod bearing. ![]() The crank, rods and pistons are all in the bottom end of the engine. That dealer has a loose rod in his head maybe. (I already purchased and VERY carefully installed a new CKS that I got from a reputable online seller) SOURCE: 2002 Mazda Protege 5 knocking engine. They said they "think" its a bad crankshaft position sensor. They said the OBD2 scanner is reading the computer so the ECU isn't dead. I pulled all the plugs and double checked gaps and it looked like inside the combustion chamber was damp (getting fuel) and on top of that I felt like I could smell it a little bit too. If you dont find injector pulse or spark, suspect your cam and crank shaft position sensor. check for spark, check timing and compression. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor, and went through the reset proceedure again. Hi you need to check for fuel pressure and volume then injector pulse. I hooked up to jumper cables to be sure I had enough power. I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery, pumped the brakes a few times, and left it unhooked for 24 hours to make sure the computer reset. The guys on the Mazda forum said if I plug it back in, everything should be fine. I double checked everything and found that the CKS was unplugged. I did NOT plug the crankshaft position sensor back in, and obviously the car refused to start. I turned the car off, disconnected the crankshaft position sensor connector (to have clearance to install the bracket) Mazda Protg and Cars 1990-1998 and Ford Probe 1993-1997 Firing Orders. If everything checks out, you may have a bad. Here are the engine wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works and check for good power and ground. I noticed I forgot to reinstall this bracket the holds the Crankshaft position sensor connector (where it plugs into the wiring harness) Replaced coils but no spark switched coils with number one cylinder still no spark. Also, unplug the injectors and Oxygen sensors to see if the spark comes back, if one of these is shorted it will stop the PCM from triggering the coils. I changed all the usual (spark plugs, wires, distributor, coil, capacitor), and it still has a weak, yellow spark. The motor mounts were bad, I changed those, as well as the spark plugs, wires, oil, oil filter, and tightened up a few loose / missing bolts here and there.Įverything was fine. I have a 1990 Mazda 323 Protege, 4 cylinder, with a weak spark. The weekend came and I decided to do some repairs. So this will be like the 10th time explaining this, but I will not skip over anything.īought the car May12th. ![]()
